Another year in review - saying goodbye to 2023

I can’t believe another year is in the books, and that means it’s time for another annual recap. 2023 was an interesting year - there was some rough stuff happening in the world, and at the same time I think people were finally starting to feel fully normal after the multi-year pandemic.

As for life at Pennant Chase, I expected it to be a slower year after grinding pretty hard the years before this one. The first half of the year in particular was a little slow, as I truly needed to dial back for a bit. (We did get to have some fun with AI and add manager comments, which are always a hoot.) But in the second half of the year, I caught another wind and we got baseball milestones, importing real schedules from any year, the automatic playoff feature, automatic days off, new manager features in baseball, more split stats in baseball, and lots of little fixes. And, finally, baseball auto leagues are going to one division like the other sports to resolve the unbalanced division problems. (I know people enjoy divisions, and I do as well, but I think for Auto Leagues this is the cleanest and most fair way to handle it.)

We added over 2,500 users this year, which is pretty typical. Most years we get between 2,000 - 3,000. Of course, not all those users wind up joining a league, but it’s good to see we can maintain a consistent sign-up rate. (The only year that was unique was, of course, 2020 when we had over 6,000 people sign up.)

Okay, on to the win-total champs for 2023. In Baseball, Rreebe916 repeats as champ with 46,157 total wins. Second is chaad with 42,720 and close behind was WorcWarrior with 42,275.

In Basketball, bdavids repeats with 5,600 wins, and shane211 finishes second with 4,660 wins, followed by sytsmab with 3,145. Hat tip to dalbpho for sticking with his love for the Hoops Playground; he led the leaderboard with 2,113 wins and wroddick took second in playground with 1,400 (and an astounding .729 win pct!).

And we have new annual winners to announce this year! Not many of us have figured out the football engine, but it’s no surprise jamin has. He’s once again taken his mathematical mind to another sport and figured out the formula. Jamin led with 1,580 wins and a stunning .787 win pct. Second place was nathaniel20 with 1,465 wins and third was Gate-Mouth with 1,175 wins.

Thanks again to all of you for keeping Pennant Chase alive and well, and another great year of sports simulations!
