Basketball

Basketball

I have played a lot of baseball on this site and recently tried a few basketball teams and I must say have been very unimpressed with the lack of realism in basketball.
Way too many games of star studded lineups scoring 70 points.
Takes all of the fun out of it.
Will finish these basketball leagues then will run like crazy back to nothing but baseball here 😂

Re: Basketball

You went from loving it to hating it pretty fast - seems like you're taking the necessary time to learn the system. That was sarcasm.

If you can point to some of the teams you're frustrated by, we may be able to help - if you're playing guys over their real-life minutes, they are going to stop shooting well.

Like the baseball sim, all-time great combos are not going to feel like a normal season. Like all sim engines, they work best when playing in a real-life universe which is not most leagues on here, so then you have to learn the quirks/ropes of how to be successful.

And it's a lot easier to get good at basketball because there just aren't as many people playing it. Without trying very hard, I'm in a league where I think I made the finals four times in a row. I don't think I've ever done that in any baseball league.

Re: Re: Basketball

Real quickly what I would say about the one team I looked at, your ATG team, again you have to remember every team is loaded. So while you're looking at your team saying, "What the hell, I have an All-Star lineup" - so does everyone else.

You have the second lowest FG% in the league, and you're close to the bottom in blocked shots and steals. I would say those three facts are largely dooming your team.

Kidd and Sikma aren't that helpful in ATG, especially since they both have low FG%. They were great players, but having specialists in the sim is hugely valuable since you're going up against impossible opponents every game, it's important to be great at certain things. Alvin Robertson or Hassan Whiteside may not have been better all-around players than Kidd and Sikma, but they were amazing at steals and blocks respectively, and THAT's what can win when paired with your two scoring stars like Bird + Barkley or whatever.

Sure, if you were in a league replaying the 1981 season, Sikma would crush it. But that's not the universe of most auto leagues. Sikma shot under 50% as a center and he's going to shoot even lower on PC Auto Leagues because of the defenders he's up against.

Re: Basketball

Answer me this , is there an ideal number on the TWS for a starting 5?
I played What If Sports basketball years ago and each player was given a Usage number , the better the player the higher the Usage number. But too much Usage and the team was flat.

Re: Re: Basketball

The draft system and seeing all of the names is a lot of fun, and then the games started 😂
I obviously don't know what I'm doing yet but a 2022 team of
Jokic, Jaylen Brunson, Jaylen Brown, Brandon Ingram and Damontas Sabonis should be a pretty good club.
Let's see if I can win with this group

Re: Basketball

What you describe about usage sounds very similar to what can happen - there is no magic "too much TWS" number, but when you have a bunch of guys who shoot a lot, you're diluting the guys who you may really want to shoot, and then you're also diluting other skills typically like rebounding, defense, etc. I use TWS as a guide to look for other skills. TWS itself doesn't do anything, but it can indicate the player is strong in certain areas, or they are simply well-rounded - but too many "well-rounded" guys could result in your team falling behind in certain key categories.

I won't say basketball is for everyone, but those who love it really seem to love it, so I think once you figure it out, it's pretty fun.

Re: Re: Basketball

You have to get guys that can fill jobs.
I like to think of it like this……
If you’re making an all-time starting lineup and you have Jordan and Kobe for the wings, you better get Rodman and Bill Russel for some great defense and rebounding bc they’re not getting a lot of shots. With those 4, would you want a guy like Iverson or Pistol Pete at PG? No way!! Those guys shoot a ton, look for a guy like Rondo that can grab some rebounds and play great defense. He doesn’t need shots to be effective.

Thats all hypothetical and I know Bill Russell isn’t a regular player here but hopefully I’m making sense? Lol.

If you want more realistic stats, check out some historic leagues that are going year by year and those stats are usually pretty well represented.

Sometimes a team looks like they will be great but there just aren’t enough basketballs for everyone to get their shots.

Re: Basketball

I luv basketball :)

Re: Re: Basketball

look at Jamin's teams to see how to construct one - this is solid advice for all sports on PC. :)
