Guilty pleasure

Guilty pleasure

I'm going to watch The Natural tonight. There are plenty of decent baseball movies out there, but this is my favorite. That little hint of unbelievable puts it over the top for me. I'm sure it's been discussed ad nauseum on the boards before, but thought I'd bring it up again with opening day around the corner. Feel free to suggest your favorite.

Re: Guilty pleasure

Loved The Natural, but Field of Dreams is my favorite. Have probably watched it a thousand times and can recite it line for line.

Re: Guilty pleasure

Great topic

I have a hard time naming only one..

I need at least a top five... in order

no1 : Field of Dreams
no2 : 61*
no3: A League of their Own
no4: Eight MEN out
no5: Moneyball

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

All great choices guys, mine are:
1. The Pride of The Yankees
2. Sandlot
3. Major league
4. A League of Their Own
5. The Natural
6. Field of Dreams

Re: Guilty pleasure

Love them all but why is it that every movie about the babe is a joke , espicially the one with william bendix. If you love field of dreams read the book shoeless joe by wp kinsella. Bingo long and the travelling all stars is highly underrated and can be seen on youtube for free. you cant go wrong with darth vader , lando calarisian and richard pryor lol

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

It Happens Every Spring

Bang the Drum Slowly

Re: Guilty pleasure

bang the drum is the brian's song of baseball movies

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

Sometimes a film is much more than a baseball movie.

The Natural: The power of myths (think King Arthur and Excalibur (the bat)

Bang the Drum Slowly: Power of friendship and personal respect

Field of Dreams: Regret, Missed Opportunities in Life, Nostalgia for a time that likely never happened

Like James Earl Jones might say' What do they all share? Baseball. It is the thread that links it all, as both life and metaphor.'

Re: Guilty pleasure

Hands down, my favorite baseball movie, that I watch every spring, is Major League !!

1. Major League
2. Bull Durham
3. The Natural
4. It Happens Every Spring (Ray Milland)
5. Field of Dreams
6, Mr. Baseball (Tom Selleck)

I like Bang the Drum, it's a bit of a downer for me.

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

The only thing i dont like about field of dreams is every time i watch it i seem to have allergies and my eyes water uncontrollably lol

Re: Guilty pleasure

highly contagious

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

Moneyball for me is the top baseball movie ever. It's an ever better book. Sure, it's set in baseball environments but the characters and their growth and vulnerabilities make the book and the movie something I watch and read over and over.

Re: Guilty pleasure

"He's got an ugly girlfriend. An ugly girlfriend means he's got no confidence."-MoneyBall

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

It's a documentary, but "The Battered Bastards of Baseball" is fantastic.

Re: Guilty pleasure

I second that about “The Battered Bastards of Baseball”. Definitely worth a watch.

Re: Guilty pleasure

I really enjoyed the battered bastards of baseball. Kurt Russell and his Dad, a story I never knew about. Kurt Russell was a very good ballplayer, if not for an injury who knows.

If you have not seen it, check it out.

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

A few not mentioned that I like are:
The Babe (John Goodman)
For Love of the Game (Kevin Costner)
Brewsters Millions (borderline calling it a baseball movie but a movie with baseball in it) ;)
The Fan (Awesome suspense type movie)
Cobb (Kind of makes me not like the guy but it’s a good movie)

Re: Guilty pleasure

for the Love of the Game is rarely on anybodys list...it's not on mine....

it,'s more of a love/romance movie than anything else...

but the actual baseball scenes in it are pretty good...

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

Bro, this is a baseball movie. It’s directly about his last game.

Starring Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston, it follows the perfect game performance of an aging star baseball pitcher, Billy Chapel as he deals with the pressures of pitching in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in his final outing by calming himself with memories about a long-term relationship with Jane Aubrey.

I don’t guess I know of a movie that is all baseball. Like, even Field of Dreams and all the classics have a story behind them.

Re: Guilty pleasure

I'm sure it's just an oversight, but no one has mentioned "Fever Pitch" yet.

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

bingo long and the travelling all stars , james earl jones , billy dee williams and richard pryor great costumes , cars and set pieces. good baseball play too . isnt it funny how every good baseball movie seems to have james earl jones ???.

Re: Guilty pleasure

Haven't seen Bingo Long since I was a kid when it came out in the theaters.

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

"Fastball" was a fun documentary to watch as well

Re: Guilty pleasure

I loved fastball. Fascinating documentary, would recommend.

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

This one flew under the radar , The catcher was a spy , true story about moe berg. Paul Rudd starred true story of ww2 spy that was an mlb player

Re: Guilty pleasure

For what it's worth, MLB.com has a list of the top 25 baseball movies of all time on their news feed today. Bull Durham, A league of their own and Pride of the Yankees filled out the top 3.

Re: Re: Guilty pleasure

bingo long deserves top 25 over a couple of those, plus no love for the catcher was a spy true story of tigers catcher winning the war for us the u.s.
